Now you can then use your standard NHS Smart Card to securely authenticate your access to any NHS clinical software you have access to on your Workspaces vPC.

Make Sure Your Workspaces Account is Setup

If you are an existing Workspaces user and have received this guide from your support team then you can skip to the next section below. If you have been sent or have been told you will receive a new invite to Workspaces then please follow the instructions you received in the invite and setup your account & password before continuing with this guide. Once you have finished the steps outlined in your invite then please Quit the Amazon Workspaces App on your device and then continue with this guide.

MacOS Compatibility

Your Mac must have MacOS Catalina installed to support the use of your USB Smart Card reader & NHS Smart Card. Currently Teradici do not support USB devices on MacOS Big Sur 11.x - therefore we would strongly advise not to update to this version of MacOS currently.

Downloading & Installing the PCoIP Client

Before you begin you must be logged in as Administrator on your Windows 10 PC or Laptop and on MacOS you must know your Admin password to install the PCoIP client software.

Firstly download the latest PCoIP Software Client for Windows or MacOS from here;

https://docs.teradici.com/find/product/software-and-mobile-clients

Note; MacOS users should ensure they install v20.10 of the PCoIP Client (**and make sure that they are running the latest MacOS Catalina version**)

To install the PCoIP Software Client for Windows;

  1. Double-click the Software Client for Windows installer executable (pcoip-client.exe) to begin installation.

  2. Follow the prompts to specify installation locations, and to agree to any licenses.

  3. Click Finish to complete installation and close the installer.

To install the PCoIP Software client for MacOS;

  1. Download the PCoIP DMG installer file

  2. Attach your Smart Card reader to one of your USB ports.

  3. Open the Installer

  4. In the window that opens copy the PCoIP Client to Applications ie drag the PCoIP icon onto the Applications folder icon and drop it there (don’t open or run it directly from the DMG). Close the installer window.

  5. Launch the PCoIP Application (from your Applications folder - not from the the DMG window if still open) - this will trigger a window to request your permission.

  6. Now from the Apple menu open System Preferences -> Security & Privacy and select the the ‘General’ tab

  7. Click the padlock Icon (bottom left) to unlock and then allow software from Teradici in the panel just above. Then close the padlock again and close the window.

  8. Now follow the steps in the next section of the guide

Connecting to your Workspaces vPC for the first time

  • Double-click the PCoIP Client desktop icon, alias, or the program file PCoIPClient to launch the application.

  • Use the ‘New Connection’ Button.

  • In the ‘Host Address or Code field’, enter the Registration Code of your Workspaces vPC (this was provided in the original invite email you received from Amazon) & add a ‘Connection Name’ so that you can access your Workspaces vPC easily in the future. Now click 'Save'.

  • Click ‘Next’ and now enter your Workspaces vPC ‘User name’ (this was also provided in the original invite email you received from Amazon) and the password that you created when you completed your user profile (one of the steps you completed in the invite email). Lastly type a single character in the MFA Token field (any upper/lower-case character from the keyboard will do)

  • Lastly click ‘OK’ to connect to your Workspaces vPC.

  • If your Workspaces vPC has not been accessed recently or this is the first time today that you have accessed it you may see the Error message below displayed. This is normal as your vPC shuts down automatically when not in use to save energy and it indicates that your Workspaces vPC is starting up. Wait 2-3 mins and login again and you should connect successfully.

Connecting to your Workspaces vPC subsequently

  • Double-click the PCoIP Client desktop icon, alias, or program file PCoIPClient to launch the application. The PCoIP App will open to the screen below (your saved connections will be different though of course)

  • Click on your previously saved connection (ie the step you completed in the previous section).

  • Enter your Username & Password in the correct fields and then an upper/lower-case character in the MFA Token field (any upper/lower-case character will do).

  • Click ‘OK’ to connect to your Workspaces vPC.

  • If you see an ‘Authentication failed’ screen then it may be because you made a mistake entering your Username or Password. Double check they are correct.

Connecting your USB Smart Card reader & accessing it from your Workspaces vPC

  • Make sure that your USB Card Reader is connected to one of your Mac/PC’s USB ports.

  • Click in the PCoIP Clients window and select Connection > USB Devices from the menu.

    A list of USB devices connected to your PC/Mac will be displayed. Integrated USB devices, such as built-in cameras on laptops, will appear in this list along with devices you have plugged in yourself.

  • Click Connect beside the USB device named ‘Smart Card Reader USB’ and the device's name should turn green and Connect will change to ‘Disconnect’.

  • Now click ‘Close’ to complete connecting to your USB Smart Card Reader.

Testing your Smart Card

  1. Insert your NHS Smart Card into your Smart Card reader.

  2. The Identity Agent window should now be displayed.

  3. You should now be able to Authenticate to EMIS, S1 or Adastra using your NHS smart card.

Finishing your Shift or Session

When your shift or session has been completed you should select the Connection > Disconnect menu option to disconnect from your Workspaces vPC. Or alternatively Quitting the application will also disconnect you from your Workspaces vPC.

Please do not shutdown your Workspaces vPC using its Windows menu - it is designed to be in operation 24-7.
